It was during the July 2020 lockdown that I finally gave myself permission to chase a childhood dream.
There’s a superstition here in the Philippines: if a baby is born with the umbilical cord wrapped around them, it means their mother wore a lot of jewelry while she was pregnant, and the child grows up with a love for fashion. I was that baby.
Growing up, I was obsessed with fashion and anything creative. I remember cutting pictures out of magazines, models in colorful outfits and bold jewelry, and collaging them together, just to be near that world in some small way.
As I got older, my school projects were always the ones my teachers pointed out. That’s when I first realized I had a gift for turning what was in my head into something my hands could actually make. Not long after, I taught myself how to make jewelry, just as a hobby at first.
When I started working full-time, I tried designing outfits and making my own jewelry on the side. But life got busy, and instead of creating, I started buying, building a wardrobe of jewelry to complete every outfit. I never left the house without it.
Then the pandemic came, and I got sick. Stress had been building for a while, and I needed somewhere to put it. That’s when I picked up macrame, not as a business plan, just as a way to breathe.
I started sharing what I made online, almost hesitantly. It found an audience faster than I expected, and the orders started coming in. From that point on, I never really stopped. Every piece since has been something I designed myself, by hand.
This year, 2026, marks Jhaydzcrafts’ 6th year. I’ll be honest, it hasn’t been a straight line. I’ve held a full-time job through most of it, and consistency has been the hardest part.
Building this website is my way of holding myself accountable to the spark that started all of this. If you’re sitting on the same kind of dream, I hope this is proof that it’s never too late to start creating and putting your work out into the world.
The road here has been full of obstacles and lessons, but the fulfillment I get from making something with my own hands makes every bit of it worth it. My hope is that what I create inspires you the way craftsmanship has always inspired me.
